I don't really watch TV, just a few hours here and there Thats what everyone says.
However statistics have shown that a person watches 4 to 5 hours of television per day.
Feeling shocked? Here are more unbelievable facts:
1. In a 65- year life, a person with have spent 9 years watching television.
2.Number of minutes a child watches television per week: 1680 ( Compare this to the number of minutes parents have a meaningful talk with their children, which is 3.5)
3.By the time a child finishes elementary school, he would have witnessed 8000 murders on television.
I believe we all have participated in long and dull talks about the negative effects of television, like how it fills your mind with rubbish, how it passes the wrong message. But fear not, i'm not going to talk about the negative effects of television in this post. What i am blogging about here is exactly WHY people watch television?
My take is that we watch TV of escape the confined reality of our space. We watch TV because we want to discover new things, we want to convince ourselves that we too, can be like the people on tv, however harsh and cruel the reality maybe. By watching TV shows, we are transported in a whole new setting, we are set free in a space where sky is the limit, limitations in the real world all do not apply. We get to experience and feel what we probably will not experience in our entire life. I also believe that through watching cartoons, we can inspire creativeness in young children. I believe this is also the reason we get less creative as we age. As we get older, we gradually understand the limitations in our society, and our mind becomes one dimensional and dull, in contrast, the young children's blissful ignorance allows them to think without limitations. Back to the subject, my favourite channel will have to be the Discovery Channel. This is because most of my favourite shows are on this channel. Discovery Channel, as its name suggests, allows us to discover the wonders and insights of the world. Its range of shows go from surviving in the Sahara desert to insights on the world's toughest prisons. Frankly, i love watching Discovery Channel shows because it allows me to forget the heavy weights of responsibility and limitations of the real world. By watching these programmes, i can ignore limitations of the real world like: I am just 14 years old, I am just a student, I have school tomorrow, I am currently sitting on a couch and stuck in my house. Summing up, watching television programmes isn't all that bad, as long as it is done in moderation.
As I've promised, below are my favourite shows:
1. Mythbusters
A team of experts join up to perform countless outrageous experiments to determine what is fact, and what is myth.
2. Man VS Wild.
Ex-US marine Bear Grylls tries to survive in the harshest places on Earth, from the Sahara Desert to the Bone-chilling Alaska plains.
3. Inside
Inside is a show that brings us "Inside" places that are normally restricted to normal people. Most of its episodes are about the situation inside America's harshest prisons.
4. I Shouldn't Be Alive
This programme tells us the real life story of how people miraculously survived from sure-death situations.
Thats all folks, see you another time, another day.
